The place where our largest plants ripen is the Freyburg Edelacker. The picture changes from plot to plot, sometimes from row to row, with wild orchids growing here and wild thyme there. What remains the same is the steep southern exposure and the rich minerality of the shell limestone. A mountain made for the grape varieties that are close to our hearts: Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir. They really come into their own in the Edelacker.
The VDP.GROSSE LAGE EDELACKER is a picture-book site for great growths: with a cool, dry continental climate, steep slopes exposed to the south, the special microclimate of the river valley and deep, weathered shell limestone soils on heat-retaining bedrock. Mediterranean herbs grow here in competition with the wine. You can taste this, as the typical minerality is always accompanied by a delicate bouquet of herbs.
