ORBEL, Nierstein | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® ORBEL is the vineyard on the Rote Hang (Red Slope) that is the farthest away from the Rhine River. It is the last VDP.GROSSE LAGE® on this chain of hills and forms the southwest border. This steep site with up to 60 percent slope above the Nierstein hamlet of Schwabsburg is also dominated by the vermilion red coloured Rotliegend rock that lends the Roter Hang its name. The ORBEL GL faces south and vines benefit from maximum solar radiation. The Rhine simultaneously provides cool air and functions as a climate regulator for the ORBEL GL. The primary grape variety is Riesling. History: The land parcel named Orbel was first mentioned in the village chronicles in the year 1386.
