The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® ROTENBERG south and south-east facing site with a 50 to 70 % slope located in the Alsenz valley. It rises from 250 metres to the edge of the forest on the peak of the hill at 350 metres a.s.l. The foundation is comprised of Rotliegend sandstone interspersed with rhyolite. The reddish colour of the soil is due to its high iron content and gives this site its name, which can be translated to “Red Mountain”. The top soil is rocky and meagre. The adjacent forest protects the vines from the cold air, but cold air drafts still slow vegetation and grapes can and do hang on the vine longer here to ripen.
