HERRENBERG, Rech | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The steep, terraced VDP.GROSSE LAGE® HERRENBERG is a sunny south facing slope between 130 and 230 metres a.s.l. The top section of the site has a slope gradient of 60 percent, the remainder 25 percent minimum. The soil is stony and of volcanic origin with slate and greywacke. Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) is the preferred variety in this vineyard and many of the vines are ungrafted. The HERRENBERG is the only GROSSE LAGE® around Rech, which has not been consolidated, because no wine estate was willing to exchange vineyards. History: The name Herrenberg can be traced to the Grafen of Saffenburg. Their fortress ruin on the slope opposite is easily viewed from the vineyard. The aristocracy of Saffenburg were the lords of the village Rech and the surrounding vineyards.
