The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® HALENBERG is one of the smallest vineyards in Monzingen, but it has the best reputation. It lies to the east of town between 160 and 220 metres a.s.l. The 20 to 70 percent slope with a south to southwest exposition is warmed in summer by thermal air. The convex and slightly overhanging peak above the vineyard captures and circulates this warm air, thus protecting the vineyard from extreme drops in temperature at night. The soil is weathered Waderner Schichten, a conglomerate of blue-grey slate and quartzite, that makes the steep vineyard easily warmed. The site is prone to dryness in summer. The difficult, arid growing conditions cause vines to compensate with small, highly aromatic grapes. Because these grapes are less prone to rot, these climatic conditions are advantageous for the production of noble sweet wines.
