PFAFFENWIES RÖDER, Lorch | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®




The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® PFAFFENWIES RÖDER in Lorch enjoys a view of the Rhine River and the Rheinstein Fortress. Rocky slate and quartzite dominate the soil. Riesling is cultivated in this partially steep slope that has up to a 45 % gradient. The vineyard lies at 90 to 160 metres a.s.l. The nearby Rhine River has a temperature and humidity regulating effect on the microclimate of the GL PFAFFENWIES. History: The vineyard was first mentioned as “Pafenwies” in documents dating 1211-Beginning in 1235 it was also referred to as “Paffenwissen”. The site was named after Pfarrer (priest) Dydo, son of Knight Nikolaus von Scharfenstein.
