THE VDP.WÜRTTEMBERG

Welcome to the VDP.Württemberg

The Future is Named Lemberger!

Württemberg is proud of a very special red grape variety – Lemberger. On the often-calcareous soils of the region along the Neckar and around Stuttgart, it produces powerful, spicy wines – which in Austria are called Blaufränkisch. But Württemberg’s VDP.Winegrowers are also very good with the Pinot family varieties.

JUST KEEP FOLLOWING THE NECKAR ...

The Neckar is the main artery of the Württemberg winegrowing region. Along two hundred and fifty nautical kilometers it makes its way past the Jura strata of the Swabian Alb, touches the Keuperland near Stuttgart and cuts its way north in deep turns through the shell limestone found there. Together with its smaller offspring, the Kocher, Jagst, Murr, Enz and Rems tributaries, it has formed the present vineyard slopes into an unmistakable and yet majestically varied wine landscape over the course of many millions of years.

Württemberg wines grow predominantly on deeply weathered, reddish-warm keuper marl, the deposits of a primeval sea. In the Rems, Bottwartal, Stromberg and Zabergäu near Heilbronn as well as in Hohenlohe, the layers of gypsum keuper and colored marl contain the sizable natural supply of minerals and nutrients that make this landscape so fertile.

On the other hand, the fossil-rich shell limestone emerges on steep slopes in the narrow valley turns of the middle Neckar Valley as well as at Enz, Jagst, Kocher and Tauber. Narrow terraces supported by heat-storing natural stone walls bear witness to the centuries-old winegrowing tradition of Württemberg.

DRINK YOURSELF INSTEAD OF AUCTIONING...

Wine auctions were never  common in Württemberg: The wines grown and matured here were almost always drunk within the region itself. Württemberg quality wines first became known nationwide as a result of the commitment of some wineries in the ranks of the VDP at the beginning of the seventies. The foundation of VDP.Württemberg in 1975 was the logical next step. Today, 412 hectares of vineyards are spread over a total of 18 member estates. Lemberger needs no longer fear a comparison with Spätburgunder, and red grape varieties cover almost 70% of the vineyard area. Another Swabian specialty is Trollinger, a variety notable for its moderate alcohol and often enjoyed together with regional cuisine.
