VDP: What is so special about your winery?
Sandra Sauer: We are aware of how lucky we are to be able to cultivate our vines in such an outstanding location as the Escherndorfer Lump. The beautiful landscape surrounding Escherndorf is a gift of nature. Our task is to protect and preserve it. As far as the winery building is concerned, our wine shop and tasting room has a modern, timeless design. It is a place where our guests feel at home and can get to know our wines better.
VDP: What is your winery philosophy?
Sandra Sauer: We live according to the seasons with the awareness that we have only a limited number of years to create special wines. Each phase of the vine’s growth, the ripening of the grapes, the harvest in autumn and the care in the cellar offers incredible possibilities for us. Making the right decisions has a lot to do with attentiveness, experience and intuition. Our aim is to observe nature closely in order to choose the right measures to ensure healthy and highly aromatic grapes at harvest in autumn. We want the taste of our wines to come from the vineyard!
VDP: To which wine style do you aspire?
Sandra Sauer: We want to make wines that tell a story and have a long lifespan. These wines are an exciting expression of our shell limestone soils that are still fun to drink and not too complicated.
“WE ARE AWARE OF HOW LUCKY WE ARE TO BE ABLE TO CULTIVATE OUR VINES IN SUCH AN OUTSTANDING LOCATION AS THE ESCHERNDORFER LUMP.”
VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?
Sandra Sauer: Our VDP.GUTSWEIN JUST Silvaner is the perfect entry-level wine. In order to discover our uniqueness and the Escherndorfer Lump origin, I recommend our VDP. ERSTE LAGE® Silvaner from the Escherndorfer Lump vineyard.
VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?
Sandra Sauer: Of our 2012 VDP.GROSSE LAGE® AM LUMPEN Riesling GG! We won the Feinschmecker Riesling Cup with this wine! And that as a wine from Franken!
VDP: Why did you become a vintner?
Sandra Sauer: It’s exactly what I wanted to do. There was never another career wish.
VDP: Do you have role models?
Sandra Sauer: The understanding of nature and our soil in interaction with our vines and the profound knowledge derived from decades of experience that my father shares with me – this is my role model.
VDP: What are your next goals?
Sandra Sauer: We strive to constantly improve the quality of our wines and at the same time cultivate our most valuable treasure, our vineyards and vines, in the best possible way in harmony with nature. This will continue to be our greatest challenges in the future.
VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?
Sandra Sauer: We want to preserve traditions and move forward with innovation.
VDP: Why should people visit your winery?
Sandra Sauer: A visit to our winery on the Mainschleife (Main River Bend) is a sojourn from everyday life. To simply relax on one of the numerous benches in the vineyards and enjoy the breathtaking landscape always makes a trip to Escherndorf worthwhile.
