VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Christian Kallisch: The combination of a down-to-earth Franken way of life and (wine) culture at the highest level. This is exemplified in our headquarters, which is listed as a historic monument, and the modern winery building, which was awarded the Bavarian Architecture Prize. Our Romantik Hotel is complemented by fine-dining in two restaurants – we’d be pleased to welcome you!

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?

Christian Kallisch: Quality stems in the vineyard. We concentrate on a few prime vineyard sites with distinctive character.

VDP:To which wine style do you aspire?

Christian Kallisch: Mineral wines that provide wine lovers pleasure and inspire the desire for more.

VDP: Do you have a favorite grape variety?

Christian Kallisch: Silvaner in all its facets and at every level of the VDP quality pyramid.

“IT ALL STARTED ON WINE TRIPS WITH MY PARENTS.”

VDP:Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Christian Kallisch: Our Volkach Silvaner VDP.ORTSWEIN. The wine is a good representative of our house and our philosophy. On the one hand playful, but also a hearty Franken wine.

VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Christian Kallisch: Of the Volkach Weissburgunder VDP.ORTSWEIN. It’s a well-textured Pinot Blanc from a wooden barrel that promises a long-lasting taste experience.

VDP: Why did you become a vintner?

Christian Kallisch: The connection between nature and wine is simply the perfect combination for a long life. It all started on wine trips with my parents. The beautiful vineyards, the many wineries and the good food – it all simply inspired me! Later, a journey to Burgundy opened my eyes to just what is possible with wine.

VDP: Do you have role models?

Christian Kallisch: Yes, Burgundy and various individuals. I always apply the thought, “what can I derive from this for my wine style?”

VDP:What are your next goals?

Christian Kallisch: To reduce the number of grape varieties to the essential and focus on Silvaner, Pinots and the Scheurebe.

VDP:How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Christian Kallisch: Silvaner is demanding and we take the zeitgeist into account while still adhering to the Bocksbeutel bottle!

VDP:Why should people visit your winery?

Christian Kallisch: Because of our two restaurants. In the “Schwane 1404”, you can look forward to sophisticated regional cuisine with heart and soul combined with wines from our VDP.PRÄDIKATSWEINGUT. In our Fine-Dining-Restaurant “Weinstock”, you will experience a symphony of aromas and the suspense of great Franken wines. In addition, you can, of course, also enjoy the evening sun at the Brünnle am Volkacher Ratsherr, best equipped with a picnic basket and a glass of Silvaner. Or relax in a canoe at the foot of the top vineyards along the Main River.
