The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® DICKER FRANZ is located in Sulzfeld in Kraichgau at an altitude of 220 to 260 meters. The vineyards, where Lemberger grows, lean towards the southwest with a gradient of up to 30 percent. The deep soils are characterized by mineral gypsum keuper. The site is solely owned by the Burg Ravensburg winery. The vineyards are located on the south-western flank directly below Ravensburg Castle, with a gradient of up to 35 percent, and “look out” over the village of Sulzfeld. The south-south-west exposure allows sunshine until sunset and excellent protection from cold easterly winds, but very good ventilation from the west.
History: The single vineyard is named after Baron Franz Göler von Ravensburg (1701-1765). He went down in family history as the “Fat Lord”, as he is said to have been very fond of culinary delights. Since then, the site has been known for its characteristic Blaufränkisch (Lemberger). Blaufränkisch is said to have been planted there for the first time after the Thirty Years' War. It was therefore one of the first wines of this grape variety in Germany.
