The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® KÖNIGLICHER WEINBERG lies above the Pillnitz Castle. It drops from its highest point at 170 metres a.s.l. down to 125 metres at a moderate incline of 30 %. The vineyard faces south-southwest toward the Elbe River. Riesling is the predominant variety and grows on weathered granite. The Elbe Valley offers vineyard slopes good protection in a very northern location. Days are also longer and the sunshine is able to warm the dark granite soil in this GL quite well.
History: The vineyard above the Pillnitz Castle was planted nearly two centuries ago under the reign of Frederick Augustus I, King of Saxony. The vineyard was laid out with a route system for delivery, waterways – both above ground and underground, and a press house. A little church dedicated to the Holy Spirit is also located in the vineyard.
