The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® HÖLLE lies at the edge of the village Johannisberg and slopes south-southwest toward Elsterbach. On the one side, the Rhine Valley protects this 5.4-hectare vineyard from the wine, yet it is broad and open here and also allows full exposition to the sun. The GL HÖLLE lies between 140 and 150 metres a.s.l. with a slope gradient of 20 to 40 %. The vines root in easily warmed Taunus quartzite and pebbly-stony loam with good water storage capacity.
History: The name Hölle does not come from the hot temperatures, but rather from the name “Halde” (heap or pile). The site was first mentioned as “Helda in Monti Sanctis Johannis” in documents dating 1180.
