WINKLERBERG HINTER WINKLEN, Ihringen | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

While the rest of the Winklerberg classified site is typically hot, even sub-tropical in summer, VDP GROSSEN LAGE® WINKLERBERG HINTER WINKLEN tends to remain somewhat cooler. Little wonder, given that it sits at a hefty 220 to 250 meters in elevation and has a more open topography. A mountain spur — the Rappenecker — stretches out in front of the site, providing shade until mid-day, after which the vines and grapes enjoy full exposure to the sun. This west and southwest-facing site sees up to 1,700 hours of sunshine per year on average. The soils of this steep vineyard (inclines between 30 and 40 percent) are composed of dark volcanic rock and loess that store the sun's warmth.
