THE VDP.AHR

Welcome to the VDP.Ahr

Pinot Noir is our passion!

The Ahr is among Germany’s smaller winegrowing regions and stretches 25 kilometers along the river, which flows from southwest to northeast. 560 hectares are planted with vines. Red grape cultivation is predominant on the Ahr – the region is regarded as a red wine paradise in Germany.

WINEGROWING IN PROTECTED LOCATIONS

Located on the northern border of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Ahr Valley stretches from west-by-southwest to east-by-northeast between the towns of Altenahr and Heimersheim. Its course, northerly climate and in particular steep sun-kissed slopes on the left (south-facing) bank of the river form sheltered locations that are remarkably well suited for viticulture, especially as their dark soils warm up quickly from the sunlight. At 560 millimeters a year, the Ahr Valley is relatively dry – it lies in the rain shadow of the Eifel.

The soils are characterized by greywacke and slate – both subsoils ensure good water permeability helping to keep the roots of the vines dry.

THE AHR BRINGS COLOR TO THE VDP

There’s no question that some VDP regional associations boast a longer history than that of the Ahr. Yet while the Ahr is small, it is also fine. Its six VDP.Estates cultivate just 56 hectares. Nowadays many individual wineries elsewhere have more vineyards in their own individual portfolios. Yet as specialists in Spätburgunder, the Ahr’s winegrowers have also been adding color to the VDP since 1994. They were initially part of the VDP.Nahe, but in 2017 founded their own regional association.
