The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® SACKTRÄGER is nestled in a well-protected convex site on the scarped ridge of the Rhine Rift Valley that opens east to southeast toward Oppenheim. This site is sloped with a 25 to 30 percent gradient. Vines grow on a windblown deposit of ice age loess over loam and deep calcareous marl. The soil is easily warmed and in the summer, together with the mild-tempered Rhine winds, the sheltered SACKTRÄGER GL turns into a hot kettle. The preferred varieties for this site are Riesling and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).
History: The site name was first documented in 1541 and stems from the guild of sack carriers (Sackträger). Sack carriers brought shiploads of goods from the Rhine into the city. The guild probably defended one of the towers in the vicinity.
