VDP: What is so special about your winery?
Stephan Attmann: Our vineyard diversity: six VDP.ERSTE LAGE® vineyards and eight VDP.GROSSE LAGE® vineyards. And our pioneering role in the rediscovery of traditional vinification in Germany. Since 2008, we have allowed our wine to ferment naturally and spontaneously in wooden barrels and, when possible, bottle without using pumps, only gravity. This results in wonderfully unique, distinctive wines. It all happens in our historic, cellar labyrinth, which can be visited on a guided tour where you can feel and experience our history that reaches back to 1849.
VDP: What is your winery philosophy?
Stephan Attmann: Environmentally conscious vineyard management out of great respect for wine cultural heritage and nature. In the cellar, we practice “controlled neglect”, as our great idol Hans-Günter Schwarz once succinctly put it.
VDP: For what wine style do you strive?
Stephan Attmann: Elegant, natural, multi-layered, dry, terroir wines. In other words, the traditional style of all great wines. We want to help German wine achieve higher international status. Our wines are found on the lists of the world’s top restaurants and in the cellars of collectors all over the globe.
VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak...
Stephan Attmann: The WIN WIN Riesling is our VDP.GUTSWEIN and it already has everything that distinguishes a true Von Winning wine. I would also recommend the VDP.ERSTE LAGE® Ruppertsberger Reiterpfad Riesling and the VDP.GUTSWEIN Sauvignon Blanc I, which comes from the vineyards Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten, Deidesheimer Herrgottsacker and Kallstadter Steinacker.
VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?
Stephan Attmann: If I may mention three: Sauvignon Blanc 500, VDP.GROSSE LAGE® PECHSTEIN Riesling GG, and Marmar Riesling. The Sauvignon shows that Germany can not only easily keep up with New Zealand and South Africa, but that we are also at the forefront worldwide. The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® PECHSTEIN Riesling GG is a very noble wine with legendary acidity, a unique Riesling experience that you should definitely begin by decanting. Our Riesling Marmar received a lot of praise from the very beginning and was voted Vinum Riesling Champion 2018!
