VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Dirk Würtz: No other winery has such extensive vineyard holdings in the Rote Hang as ST.ANTONY. As different as the individual sites may be, they all have the unique red slate soil in common, which makes them something very special. Beginning in the north, in Nackenheim, with the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® ROTHENBERG, to the elongated PETTENTHAL, and the BRUDERSBERG and HIPPING directly on the Rhine River, and on to the ÖLBERG, ORBEL and Schloss Schwabsburg, we have extensive vineyards that we cultivate with pride and dedication.

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?

Dirk Würtz: We like to highlight the unique origins and special characteristics of our wines. We abstain from manipulations. The true, the authentic expression of our individual vineyards and our intentions are what makes our wines outstanding. To achieve this, we follow a special production ethic to which we are fully committed.

VDP: For what wine style do you strive?

Dirk Würtz: We want to produce deep and elegant wines that still have moderate acidity. We want to capture the unique essence of the Roter Hang and produce long-lasting wines with strong character.

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Dirk Würtz: Clearly our ‘Rotschiefer’, the visiting card of the house from the Grand Cru vineyards of Nierstein.

VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Dirk Würtz: Of each and every one!

“INNOVATION IS THE CONSTANT QUESTIONING OF ONE’S OWN ACTIONS.”

VDP: Why did you become a vintner?

Dirk Würtz: At the age of 17, I was very lucky to be able to drink a glass of Bordeaux from the 1900 vintage. From that moment on, I was hooked ...

VDP: Do you have role models?

Dirk Würtz: Bernhard Breuer was a great role model.

VDP: What are your next goals?

Dirk Würtz: To make ST.ANTONY fit for the future in order to leave the next generation with a dependable and well-functioning winery, one that is aware of its tradition and its responsibility, particularly for the environment.

VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Dirk Würtz: Innovation is not possible without tradition. Tradition is the framework that is built of values and experience.

VDP: Why should people visit your winery?

Dirk Würtz: You have to stand in the Roter Hang at least once in your life to feel these incredible vineyards and their ‘vibes’.

VDP: What would you compare to making wine?

Dirk Würtz: With nothing. It’s incomparable.

VDP: If your wine were music, what would it be?

Dirk Würtz: Surely something electronic and throbbing with a bass that moves and shakes your world.
