VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Nazmiye Uzun: The special thing about our winery is our variety of Riesling vineyards from Forst to Deidesheim to Ruppertsberg. We have 20 individual vineyards, 1/3 of which are in the top vineyards. Since 1880, our treasury has been completely filled.

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?

Nazmiye Uzun: We treat our environment with care and attention and do not use any mineral or synthetic fertilizers. This is also noticeable in the taste. A piece of living Palatinate in every glass – full-bodied, aromatic and multi-layered.

“Of course we are sticking to tradition, but we are open to oenological experiments with alternative containers made of clay and ceramics.”

VDP: For what wine style do you strive?

Nazmiye Uzun: Natural, organic viticulture is the indispensable prerequisite for the subsequent, extremely gentle and individual vinification in the cellar. On the one hand, both these factors give us terroir-emphasized, mineral wines that are sustainable and storable. And on the other hand, varietal, delicately fruity, highly aromatic, precise wines, modern and expressive.

VDP: Do you have a favorite grape variety?

Andre Jankowski: Riesling & Chardonnay
Alicia Galdames Farias: Riesling

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Alicia Galdames Farias: I would recommend the Forst VDP.Ortswein because it is mineral and very terroir-oriented.
Andre Jankowski: I would recommend the Deidesheim VDP.Ortswein because the site has a high proportion of sandstone and the wine therefore has aromas of yellow fruit, stone fruit and quince.

VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Andre Jankowski: Due to the south-facing vineyard and the soil structure, I am very proud of our HOHENMORGEN Riesling GG | VDP.GROSSE LAGE. The wine shows a pronounced minerality with yellow fruit and stone fruit.
Alicia Galdames Farias: I am very proud of the KIRCHENSTÜCK Riesling GG | VDP.GROSSE LAGE. Due to the very complex soil of the Kirchenstück, the wine is very dense and long-lasting and shows a subtle saltiness with a lot of structure.

VDP:Why did you become a winegrower?

Alicia Galdames Farias: Because it's the perfect combination of natural science and hedonism!
Andre Jankowski: There's really nothing more to add, because Alicia sums it up perfectly.

VDP:Do you have role models, mentors?

Alicia Galdames Farias & Andre Jankowski: From our time as “traveling winemakers” there were many important people who had a great influence on us. From our time at Bassermann-Jordan, Ulrich Mell was a formative personality for both of us.

VDP:How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Nazmiye Uzun: Of course we stick to tradition, but we are open to oenological experiments with alternative containers made of clay and ceramics.

VDP: Why should people visit your winery?

Nazmiye Uzun: Our winery, founded in 1718, is located in the middle of the picturesque town of Deidesheim on the Wine Route. You can experience over 300 years of history during a wine tasting including a tour of our historic cellar. Our wine shop is open every day from Mon - Sun except at Christmas and we look forward to your visit.
