VDP: What is so special about your winery?
Gunther Hauck: Bassermann-Jordan has been around for 300 years; we are real pioneers in winegrowing. We are proud owners of more than ten VDP.GROSSE LAGE® vineyards. Quite unique is also our fascinating and extensive cellar labyrinth with stainless steel tanks, wooden barrels and rather rare wine vessels such as amphorae. The labyrinth has gradually grown during our long history and you can easily get lost in it. But with all the treasures that are stored here, most visitors don’t want to find their way out any more ...

Auf der Mauer
VDP.GUTSWEIN
GEHEIMER RAT DR. VON
BASSERMANN-JORDAN

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?
Ulrich Mell: We want to combine nature and culture in the vineyard in a meaningful way; that is the only way to achieve grapes of the highest quality. In the cellar, it is important for us to vinify the grapes carefully, so that we can bring exactly this quality into the glass. We believe that you can taste and experience this care and dedication in every one of our wines.
"OUR WAY OF MAKING WINES IS VERY DIVERSIFIED. THIS IN TURN ALLOWS US A BROAD AND NUANCED STYLE SPECTRUM.”E ART, WEINE ZU MACHEN, IST SEHR VIELFÄLTIG. DAS WIEDERUM ERMÖGLICHT UNS EINE BREITE UND NUANCENREICHE STILISTIK.“
VDP: For what wine style do you strive?
Ulrich Mell: Our way of making wines is very diversified. This in turn allows us a broad and nuanced style spectrum. On the one hand, there are terroir-driven, mineral wines, with good aging potential that exhibit the classic style of our house. On the other hand, we offer delicately fruity, lively and highly aromatic wines that are very modern and quite expressive.

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?
Gunther Hauck: I would slowly work my way through the Burgundian varieties and single-vineyard Rieslings and then go on to the matured wines. Or you could start a wine tasting with our Gutssekt (house sparkling wines).
VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?
Ulrich Mell: ‘Auf der Mauer’ is a wonderfully dry Riesling VDP.GUTSWEIN of which you simply can't get enough. But of course, there is also the extensive range of VDP.GROSSE LAGE® wines, world-class wines that you simply have to drink at least once in your life.

VDP: Why should people visit your winery?
Gunther Hauck: There are many very, very good reasons, all of which can be read under the keyword ‘Bassermann-Jordan’ in Gault Millau, Feinschmecker, Eichelmann or Vinum. In addition, we have won many numerous awards and accolades at home and abroad. But besides all that, you can also simply come visit us to drink a bottle of Riesling at the small resting place in the Leinhöhle and enjoy the expansive view of the Rhine Plain surrounded by Deidesheim’s sea of vines and the Forst and Ruppertsberg mountains!
