VDP:What is so special about your winery?

Hans Hengerer: As far as history goes, the Kistenmacher and Hengerer families have a tradition of winegrowing that goes back over 600 years. In the year 1418 the first mention can be found in the ledgers of the free imperial city of Heilbronn.

VDP:What is your winery philosophy?

Hans Hengerer: My goal is the production of authentic, high-quality wines. The foundation for this is respect for our natural resources and their sustainable use.

VDP:For what wine style do you strive?

Hans Hengerer: Typical regional wines that are fermented fully dry and have a mild acid structure. Our broad spectrum of grape varieties is typical for our growing region and I enjoy this great potential for individuality.

VDP:Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Hans Hengerer: As an introduction I recommend a wine from our VDP.GUTSWEIN category, for example the blend “Josephine”, an uncomplicated white wine. Or a typical regional red wine from Lemberger or Pinot Noir.

VDP:Why did you become a vintner?

Hans Hengerer: That was probably put into my cradle ...

“AS AN INTRODUCTION I RECOMMEND A VDP.GUTSWEIN LIKE OUR BLEND ‘JOSEPHINE’, AN UNCOMPLICATED WHITE WINE.”

VDP:How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Hans Hengerer: The cultivation of the vine has a long history. It is important to preserve the tried and true. As to innovations, we always consider whether they make sense under our circumstances. The exchange with colleagues, such as that which takes place in the winegrowers’ quintet “Junges Schwaben”, is very important to me.

VDP:Why should people visit your winery?

Hans Hengerer: On a walk through woods and vineyards, you can walk through a sandstone quarry in the immediate vicinity of our winery, where you can see the geological peculiarities of the Heilbronn vineyards very clearly. Next to enjoying the region’s wines, the Experimenta scientific theme park and a tour of the local salt mine are also worthwhile reasons to come to Heilbronn.
