VDP:What is so special about your winery?
Jörg Ellwanger: Our family has been making wine for 500 years and we are deeply bonded to our vineyards. Today, we are mainly known for our barrique wines. As a member of the HADES vintner association, we are among the pioneers in Württemberg and also in Germany who were the first to vinify their wines in small oak barrels. We also make our mark architecturally: in front of the half-timbered building with the generous sales room stands the new winemaking facility and its barrique cellar. Of course, we are delighted that our building with Corten steel casing was awarded an architecture prize.
VDP:What is your winery philosophy?
Jörg Ellwanger: Wine quality always comes from the vineyard.
VDP:For what wine style do you strive?
Jörg Ellwanger: We want to focus on the grape variety and the vineyard site. We do as little as possible in the cellar and give each wine the time it needs.
VDP:Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?
Jörg Ellwanger: Our VDP.ERSTE LAGE® Geradstettener Lichtenberg Zweigelt, dry.
VDP:Of which wine are you particularly proud?
Jörg Ellwanger: Of our 2012 Cuvee Nikodemus.
VDP:Why did you become a vintner?
Jörg Ellwanger: I helped my father a lot and it was simply natural for me to become a vintner, but my passion really ignited during my training.
“WE TRY TO AVOID FASHIONABLE FLASHES IN THE PAN.”
VDP:Do you have role models?
Jörg Ellwanger: I always tried to go my own way.
VDP:What are your next goals?
Jörg Ellwanger: To give the Lemberger the status it deserves and at the same time raise awareness for Württemberg.
VDP:How do you combine tradition and innovation?
Jörg Ellwanger: We try to avoid fashionable flashes in the pan, but you always have to make a start. Otherwise you just have to find the right balance. In general, winegrowers didn’t do things wrong in the past, but of course you have to keep up with the times.
VDP:Why should people visit your winery?
Jörg Ellwanger: Because we are very nice people ;-)
