VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Hansjörg Aldinger: Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. For our wine-growing family, however, it is more significant that in the same year our Aldinger family ancestor arrived in a new frontier and began to grow wine here in Fellbach. Since then we have cultivated vines and are now in the 16th generation. Our monopoly vineyard the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® GIPS in Untertürkheim, documented as the oldest vineyard in Stuttgart, produces exceptionally mineral wines from white rock soil year after year.

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?

Matthias Aldinger: Less is more. We accompany the wines through their genesis and do not seek to control natural processes. The grapes are the decisive factor for authentic wines.

VDP: For what wine style do you strive?

Matthias Aldinger: We are evolving increasingly in a Francophile direction. We love Pinot grape varieties and also produce our Lemberger more and more in a Burgundian style.

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Hansjörg Aldinger: The Weissburgunder VDP.ERSTE LAGE® Untertürkheimer Gips is a highly recommendable introductory.

VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Hansjörg Aldinger: Of the Aldinger Brut Nature. For sparkling wine, you need a clear, strong vision and a lot of patience until the first bottles achieve maturity in the cellar.

VDP: Why did you become a vintner?

Matthias Aldinger: There is hardly a more creative and varied profession in the world. You need a goal, a lot of patience and the right vines on the right soil. You can do a lot right, a lot wrong. Last but not least, nature decides. It’s lucky that we can’t control everything!

“WE CAPTURE AN ENTIRE YEAR IN A BOTTLE, SO OUR CELLAR ARCHIVES ARE LIKE YEARBOOKS.”

VDP: Do you have or did you have role models, mentors?

Matthias Aldinger: Bernhard Huber, Uli Mell and Willi Bründlmayer.

VDP: What are your next goals?

Matthias Aldinger: To be able to offer mature wines from our archive.

VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Hansjörg Aldinger: Tradition and progress, that was already the motto that our father and grandfather wrote on our flag 30 years ago. It is always important that the gut feeling is right and that there is no compulsive attempt to do something innovative. Tradition is still our most important cultural asset.

VDP: Why should people visit your winery?

Hansjörg Aldinger: Our VDP.GROSSE LAGE® offers a wonderful view of the Wirtemberg Mountain. Our wine-growing region is named after it and the very beautiful funeral chapel for Queen Katharina thrones at its peak.

VDP: What would you compare to making wine?

Matthias Aldinger: We capture an entire year in a bottle, so our cellar archives are like yearbooks.
