VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Kai Schätzel: We are lighter, longer and sometimes a bit wilder, but still very down-to-earth!

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?

Kai Schätzel: No world is meant to end. Because mother nature constantly changes, we and our wines must always adapt. Environmentally friendly work the vineyard. Sustainable in the bottle. Climate change has fundamentally changed our framework. If we understand that, it’s only logical that we implement this in our cultivation strategy. To this end, we have slowed down growth in the vineyard. The vines are smaller, everything grows more gradually. The result is wine with less alcohol, but extreme shelf life.

VDP: For what wine style do you strive?

Kai Schätzel: Light, durable and authentic. My favourite grape variety is Riesling. Riesling, and a little Silvaner.

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who doesn't yet know your winery - as an introduction, so to speak?

Kai Schätzel: Kabinett! This is our calling card. Grown in the best locations on the Niersteiner Roten Hang, with invigorating balance, and light as a feather with only 7.5 percent alcohol!

“I AM HAPPY AND GRATEFUL FOR EACH OF OUR WINES.”

VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Kai Schätzel: I am happy and grateful for each of our wines, from VDP.GUTSWEIN to VDP.GROSSE LAGE®.

VDP: Do you have role models?

Kai Schätzel: Mother Nature and Father Rhine.

VDP: What are your next goals?

Kai Schätzel: Stay small to have time for the vineyard, for the cellar and for my family.

VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Kai Schätzel: That goes hand in hand in winegrowing. We are constantly learning from our experience and are always getting a little bit better. A lot of experience is a lot of tradition ;-)
