VDP: What is so special about your winery?
Dr. Rowald Hepp: As one of the oldest wineries in the world, Schloss Vollrads looks back on a very, very long history of over 800 years of viticulture. The beautiful castle is idyllically situated in the middle of the monopole vineyard Schloss Vollrads. Here you can enjoy and experience the living symbiosis of tradition and modern winemaking, including our own restaurant and the opportunity to hold events in the rooms of the castle. We also have a unique biodiversity vineyard, in which all the available Riesling clones on earth are represented in one vineyard. In this way we can study the adaptation of the individual clones to the climatic conditions of the Rheingau in the long term.
VDP: What is your winery philosophy?
Dr. Rowald Hepp: To produce unique and authentic Riesling wines with the knowledge and tradition of 800 years of wine-growing, which make our customers worldwide happy.
VDP: For what wine style do you strive?
Dr. Rowald Hepp: We concentrate fully on Riesling. You can expect delicate, characteristic wines that express the facets of this grape variety with purity and elegance.
VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?
Dr. Rowald Hepp: Our dry Gutsriesling.
VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?
Dr. Rowald Hepp: Of the development of our VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® wines, which have returned to being among the best from Rheingau over the past few years.
VDP: Why did you become a vintner?
Dr. Rowald Hepp: It excites me every year anew how a plant that appears so barren in winter produces such a noble product that inspires people all over the world and often accompanies the most beautiful moments in life. A bottle of wine bundles an entire year of memories, special features and characteristics.
VDP: Do you have role models?
Dr. Rowald Hepp: I think that being a winegrower is far too varied in all its tasks, so we can’t really name a role model or mentor. You meet many special and unique people who inspire you.
VDP: What are your next goals?
Dr. Rowald Hepp: The conversion of our business to organic vineyard cultivation and the modernisation of our winery.
VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?
Dr. Rowald Hepp: Tradition surrounds us every day at Schloss Vollrads. We live, work and operate in an important cultural monument. Despite the many traditions, the company has always been innovative, for example, the introduction of the VinoLok glass closure more than 15 years ago. The scientific side of Riesling cultivation has also occupied us for many decades. We are conducting one of the longest field trials in viticulture together with the Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences in one of our vineyard sites.
