VDP:What is so special about your winery?
Markus Milz: We are a founding member of the VDP and will be 500 years old in 2020! The winery has been family-owned since 1520 and is now operated by the 15th generation. We own three monopole vineyards - the VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® vineyards LEITERCHEN, FELSENKOPF and NUSSWINGERT. In 2018 we matured the VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® APOTHEKE Riesling 2017 in small wooden barrels after fermentation in steel tanks. We will continue with this method with the 2018 vintage.
VDP:What is your winery philosophy?
Markus Milz: We combine tradition with state-of-the-art technology - in the sense of a quote from Jim Rohn, “If you are not prepared to risk the extraordinary, you will remain average.”
VDP: For what wine style do you strive? Do you have a favourite grape variety?
Markus Milz: Of course, Riesling! We would like to continue offering our wines in traditional Mosel qualities. In addition, there will also be special bottlings of wines matured in small wooden barrels
VDP:Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?
Markus Milz: Our dry 180° Riesling and the off-dry Kabinett Riesling are ideal for getting to know our wines.
VDP:Of which wine are you particularly proud?
Markus Milz: Of the VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® APOTHEKE Riesling 2017 and our matured Spätlese wines of various vintages.

"WE WANT TO PERFECT THE GROWING OF MOSEL RIESLING IN SMALL WOODEN BARRELS."
VDP: Why did you become a vintner?
Markus Milz: The foundation stone was laid by a good old friend, then it was Markus Milz that paved the way for me.
VDP: What are your next goals?
Markus Milz: To perfect the vinification of Mosel Riesling in small wooden barrels and to constantly develop the winery further.
VDP:How do you combine tradition and innovation?
Markus Milz: The cooperation between Markus Milz (tradition) and myself (innovation) works very well. We will certainly continue to complement each other perfectly in the future. So why change anything?
VDP:Why should people visit your winery?
Markus Milz: The Mosel region is always worth a visit! Our beautiful village Trittenheim lies in the middle of a 180-degree bend of the Moselle River and is surrounded by our vineyards. A short walk along the banks of the Moselle to our winery is worthwhile at any time of the year.
