VDP:What is so special about your winery?

Thomas Haag: Our winery is characterised by its unique diversity of vineyards. We offer wines from eight vineyards that are classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and are among the best crus in the world. At the same time, we have remained a small family winery where every member of the team lives the passion for Riesling.

VDP:What is your winery philosophy?

Thomas Haag: For us, the authenticity and naturalness of our wines are at the forefront. We want to produce Riesling in its pure form and work out the respective terroir in such a way that the corresponding wine speaks for itself and its particularity comes to light.

“OUR WINERY STANDS FOR A CLASSIC STYLE, WHICH WE HAVE CONSOLIDATED OVER THE YEARS AND WHICH WE WILL CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN IN THE FUTURE.”

VDP:For what wine style do you strive?

Thomas Haag: Our winery clearly stands for the most important grape variety in the Mosel, Riesling. We want to capture its complexity and precision, based on the respective terroir, and put it in the bottle. Its low alcohol content coupled with inimitable elegance makes it unique in the wine world!

VDP:Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Thomas Haag: Of course, that depends primarily on a person’s preferences. Due to our range of wines we can offer several styles ranging from a dry Riesling to wines with residual sweetness. We recommend our VDP.GUTSWEIN as an introductory wine, which reflects the style of our winery and our soil.

VDP:Of which wines are you particularly proud?

Thomas Haag: What is important to us is not individual wines, but the entire collection. The style of our wine estate and the terroir must be recognizable, beginning with the dry VDP.GUTSWEIN Riesling all the way to the top selections of the vintage.

VDP:Why did you become a vintner?

Thomas Haag: It was clear to me right from the start that I wanted to pursue this profession.

VDP:Do you have role models?

Thomas Haag: My father is certainly someone in my wine life who has given me a lot. He has shown how the finest and  most elegant Rieslings can be impressively vinified in the Mosel. It is important to know from where you come.

VDP:What are your next goals?

Thomas Haag: First and foremost, we want to inspire our customers every year with a special overall collection and produce wines that we stand behind 100 percent as a team. In the long term, however, we need to focus even more on topics such as sustainability and innovation due to climate change.

VDP:How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Thomas Haag: Of course, we adhere to traditions, because previous generations have helped to shape the unique style of the Mosel. Our wine estate stands for a classic style, which we have consolidated over the years and which we will continue to maintain in the future. With our children at the winery, the next generation has joined the team. It is therefore important not to stagnate, but rather to evolve further while gaining inspiration from modern ideas and innovations.

VDP:Why should people visit your winery?

Thomas Haag: Everyone should visit the Moselle Valley at least once in their life! It is a unique landscape, inhabited by special people, with a wine style that is unique in the world. Our wine estate is also listed as a protected historical monument and it radiates a very special atmosphere, some even speak of a fairy-tale castle.
