VDP: What is so special about your winery?

Konrad Salwey: One example is our mountain cellar, which is up to 12 meters underground. And our 4.5-hectare VDP.GROSSE LAGE® KIRCHBERG on volcanic soil! It is really hot here in the summer and only deeply rooted, old vines can survive. Our VDP.GROSSEN GEWÄCHSE® from Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir are sourced exclusively from this site.

VDP: What is your winery philosophy?

Konrad Salwey: We give our wines time. Time, time and always time.

VDP: For what wine style do you strive?

Konrad Salwey: Our wines should be stimulating. Evenings spent with them should be long, lively and interesting.

VDP: Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Konrad Salwey: Our VDP.ORTSWEIN Oberrotweil Grauburgunder RS with its typical, animating aroma and a tannin content that gives the wine a very long aftertaste.

VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Konrad Salwey: Of all wines from the VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® KIRCHBERG, whether white or red. This location produces extremely long-lasting wines and surprises me again and again in the most beautiful way.

“I CAN’T PAINT. I CAN’T SING. I CAN’T WRITE. BUT I STILL HAVE A HIGHLY CREATIVE PROFESSION!”

VDP: Why did you become a vintner?

Konrad Salwey: I can’t paint. I can’t sing. I can’t write. But I still have a highly creative profession!

VDP: Do you have role models, mentors?

Konrad Salwey: Heinrich Wirsching, Hans-Günter Schwarz and, last but not least, my father.

VDP: What are your next goals?

Konrad Salwey: Somehow I would like to have a Cabernet Franc...

VDP: How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Konrad Salwey: Our vineyard sites are our greatest constant; I want to do them justice. I don’t want to change much about the varieties; but I can influence the clone selection here and there.

VDP: Why should people visit your winery?

Konrad Salwey: The Kaiserstuhl is a hiking landscape that simply inspires. It is also a place where you can eat and drink exceptionally well.
