Follow-up report 2022

Once again, the winegrowers of the VDP can look back on a successful auction weekend.

A selected audience was able to experience the auction traditionally "wet" on site - which means that people are able to taste the auction wines. At the same time, wine fans from all over the world could follow the auctions in Trier and Bad Kreuznach virtually and bid for the treasured wines. 

At the 2022 auctions of the GROSSER RING, the new auctioneer Edwin Vos, international head of wine and spirits and leading auctioneer for this category of the auction house Christie's | London, awarded the highest bids of the auction wines for the first time.  Together with Master of Wine Caro Maurer as host on the Nahe, Prince Michael zu Salm-Salm led entertainingly through the program.

The tradition of wine auctions in Trier continued this year with the 135th PRÄDIKATSWEINVERSTEIGERUNG and 4th GROSSE GEWÄCHSE auction of the GROSSER RING VDP.Mosel-Saar-Ruwer e.V. with great success. Many international guests in Trier and online viewers from all over the world followed a highly exciting wine auction led by auctioneer Edwin Vos. 

"With Edwin Vos, we have a proven expert who has been active on the international auction stage for many years. His extensive professional experience in the wine business, his love for the great wines of the world and especially the Riesling of Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, have set new accents in our auctions," said Carl von Schubert, Chairman of the GROSSEN RING VDP.Mosel-Saar-Ruwer e.V. 

Wines of the classification level VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS^®, Wines with the traditional Prädikat desginations and rarities were auctioned. Through the further development and the use of an auction software, developed by the GROSSER RING in cooperation with the University of Trier, the overall processes were optimized more and more and the bidding of the worldwide interested parties was professionalized. The auctions of the GROSSEN RING VDP.Mosel-Saar-Ruwer e.V. achieved total net proceeds of 2,735,870 Euros.

Results VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS®

The VDP.auction in the Nahe region once again took place at the Cineplex cinema in Bad Kreuznach. From 9 to 11 a.m., 180 wine enthusiasts were able to taste the auction wines, receive final information about the wines from the winegrowers and to place their bids with the commissioners. 

At 1 p.m. the "wet auction" began, during which the guests and bidders could lean back comfortably in their cinema seats. The respective short portrait films of the winegrowers, which were played on the big cinema screen, allowed a glimpse behind the scenes of the auction wineries. 

The host Caro Maurer MW and auctioneer Prince Michael zu Salm-Salm led entertainingly through a 3.5-hour auction with a lot of charm, humour and great results. More than 1800 viewers worldwide were able to follow the auction via livestream, for example from New York, London, Singapore, Mexico and from the auction party in Berlin, in the wine bar "Freundschaft". 

Again the auction in Bad Kreuznach brought absolute top results as well as a new record total result of 2.446.016,- Euro Netto or 3.056.296,99 Euro incl. fees and VAT. 

The charity box with the motto "20 years of VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS®" contained 18 bottles from the years 2005 to 2021 of the auction wineries from the Nahe. It realized 3,500.00 euros and was donated in favor of the sustainability project “Wurzeln schlagen” (Striking Roots) of the district of Bad Kreuznach, which finances education in schools for healthy eating with greenhouses and accompanying lessons.
