Westhofen Riesling Kabinett VDP.Grosse Lage®

The vineyard

The vineyard slope stretches in the middle and upper part of the slope in a semi-circular cauldron opening to the southeast around the old Westhofen and still exists today for the most part within the boundaries of the historic core Lage. The location is well protected from cold winds in the west and north by a row of hills, and both slope and exposure allow for optimal solar radiation.                Classified as VDP.Grosse Lage®

The soil

In the core areas of the KIRCHSPIEL we are dealing with a clay marl with strong limestone skeleton inlays and a low proportion of lime weathering loam. For a Kabinett wine, the grapes must be harvested relatively early so that the lightness and elegance typical of Kabinett is not lost. Nevertheless, a Kabinett from Großer Lage may also bring a somewhat greater fullness. After careful pressing, fermentation and ageing of the wine take place in traditional wooden barrels, as is generally customary in our region. The wine displays the typical aromas of the Kirchspiel vineyard - peach, citrus fruits, apricots and delicate flint - combined with a complex minerality. The classic, fruit-sweet Riesling Kabinett with the corresponding ageing potential.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          - Friedrich Groebe -
