VDP: What is so special about your winery?
Hansjörg Rebholz: We have a very long tradition and have worked for at least 400 years in Siebeldingen, one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Pfalz. Our winery is located directly in the centre of the village. It gives testimony to several generations and is registered as a historical monument. Of course, it has always been gradually enlarged and modernised, right up to the vinotheque. Along with the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® KASTANIENBUSCH, the VDP.ERSTE LAGE® Albersweiler Latt is also a very special vineyard. Economierat Rebholz planted our extremely steep parcel with Gewürztraminer in 1947 and trained the vines in a pergola system on terraces. Up until then, this training system was more associated with South Tyrol.

“GERMAN WINES WILL GAIN INCREASINGLY IN INTERNATIONAL IMPORTANCE, BECAUSE OUR COOL CLIMATE AND TERROIR IMPARTS INIMITABLE FINESSE AND LIGHTNESS, YET ALSO LENGTH AND DELICACY.
VDP: What is your winery philosophy?
Hansjörg Rebholz: We took over the idea of natural wine from our grandfather and continued it. The ‘natural wine idea’ means as little adulteration as possible: no deacidification, no enrichment, no fining. It also means expressing the special attributes of the vineyard, grape variety and vintage with consistency and without compromise.
VDP: For which wine style do you strive?
Hansjörg Rebholz: Our winery philosophy results in dry, fully fermented wines with pronounced typicity, elegance and outstanding ageing potential.
VDP: Of which wine are you particularly proud?
Hansjörg Rebholz: Of our VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® KASTANIENBUSCH Riesling GG. Year after year, it is a new and unique wine, which has become internationally renowned, extremely successful and popular. In 2017 it scored 100 in Gault Millau!
VDP: Who is or was your role model?
Hansjörg Rebholz: My role models are my father and my grandfather. What I admire about them is the fact that both were individualists who went their own way. My mentor was Hans-Günter Schwarz, then manager of VDP.Weingut Müller-Catoir. I was his apprentice and after my father’s death, he became my fatherly friend and advisor and continues to be this today.
VDP: What are your next goals?
Hansjörg Rebholz: To successfully pass on the business to my two sons. The experience comes from me, the curiosity more from the next generation. In my opinion, potential for the greatest wines lies in the vineyard. I am happy that with all their new ideas, the young people agree with me in this thought. I am also convinced that German wines will become increasingly important internationally because our cool climate and terroir imparts inimitable finesse and lightness, yet also length and delicacy.
