VDP:What is so special about your winery?

Werner Knipser: We have two generations working together and combining innovation with tradition. The diversity of grape varieties that you will find here is certainly something special. The limestone soils provide our wines with well buffered acidity and the loess brings high mineral content. The low average annual precipitation is also unusual: There are less than 500 mm per year.

VDP:What is your winery philosophy?

Werner Knipser: Every year, we produce wines with character that are typical of their vineyard location, grape variety and vintage. Some of the wines are only sold after a few years in the bottle.

VDP:For what wine style do you strive?

Werner Knipser: We want to produce wines that have personality ranging from light, crisp and lively to complex and concentrated with the necessary bottle maturity.

“WE WANT TO PRODUCE WINES THAT HAVE PERSONALITY: FROM LIGHT, CRISP AND LIVELY TO COMPLEX AND CONCENTRATED WITH THE NECESSARY BOTTLE MATURITY.”

VDP:Do you have a favourite grape variety?

Werner Knipser: Several: Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), Riesling and Chardonnay. These are grape varieties that strongly reflect their growing conditions and with which elegant, expressive wines with ageing capacity can be produced.

VDP:Which of your wines would you recommend to someone who does not yet know your winery – as an introduction, so to speak?

Werner Knipser: Our VDP.ERSTE LAGE® Laumersheimer Kapellenberg Riesling dry or the two VDP.GUTSWEIN, Chardonnay & Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and the Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir).

VDP:Of which wine are you particularly proud?

Werner Knipser: The RdP Spätburgunder, our VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS® wines from Spätburgunder and Riesling, and the Chardonnay Barrique ... but also the fresh, light everyday wines. Actually, I am proud of all of them!

VDP:What are your next goals?

Werner Knipser: To continue!

VDP:How do you combine tradition and innovation?

Werner Knipser: Our tradition is our very own way of making and living wine – everything that has proven itself in the past. That is our foundation and this will continue to be cultivated. This means that all new things or ideas must prove themselves. If they do, they will eventually have a permanent place and become tradition.

VDP:Why should people visit your winery?

Weingut Knipser: Certainly, because you can buy very good wines here! :-) You can taste the wines and get expert advice in our tasting room. We would love to welcome you in our ‘Halbstück’ wine tavern in the neighbouring village of Bissersheim. The name is based on the traditional 600-litre wooden barrel from the Pfalz.
