KIRCHSPIEL
Westhofen Riesling Kabinett VDP.Grosse Lage®
The site
The vineyard extends in the middle and upper slope area in a semi-circular basin opening to the southeast around the old Westhofen and still exists today for the very most part within the boundaries of the historic centrum. The site is well protected from cold winds by a row of hills to the west and north, and both slope and exposure allow for optimal sun exposure.
Classified as VDP.Grosse Lage®.
The Soil
In the core areas of KIRCHSPIEL, we are dealing with a clay marl with strong limestone skeletal layers and a small amount of limestone weathering loam. The site is also dominated by limestone in the deeper subsoil.
The wine
For a Kabinett wine, the grapes must be harvested relatively early so that the lightness and elegance typical of Kabinett is not lost. Nevertheless, a Kabinett from Großer Lage may also have a somewhat greater fullness. After careful pressing, the wine is fermented and aged in traditional wooden barrels, as is generally the case in our region. The wine shows the typical Kirchspiel aroma spectrum of vineyard peach, citrus fruits, apricots and delicate flint, combined with a complex minerality. The classic, fruit-sweet Riesling Kabinett with corresponding maturity potential. - Friedrich Groebe -
