Klaus Zimmerling

Founded in 1992, in Dresden-Pillnitz, Weingut Klaus Zimmerling practices organic viticulture even though the estate is not officially certified as such. Extremely low yields (20-30 hl/ha) are the norm at this unusual estate, and for Klaus Zimmerling, an absolute necessity for producing truly compact wines in a region like Sachsen. The four hectares (10 acres) of vines lie within the site Königlicher Weinberg in Pillnitz. Nearly all the wines are bottled in half-liter bottles. In order to eliminate annoying off flavors associated with cork, Stelvin screw caps have been used since vintage 2009. Zimmerling also has a personal approach to packaging: the label changes every year, each of which depicts a different sculpture by his wife, the Polish artist Malgorzata Chodakowska.
