Egon Müller - Scharzhof

The legendary Scharzhof is located in Wiltingen on the Saar, a tributary of the Mosel. Jean-Jacques Koch, Egon Müller’s great-great-grandfather, purchased the estate from the “République Française” in 1797, only a few years after the French Revolution and occupation of the west bank of the Rhine by the revolutionary government. Today, the property consists of 16 hectares (ca. 40 acres) of vines, half of which are in the world-renowned Scharzhofberg site. This vineyard was probably planted by the Romans, and in the Middle Ages, belonged to the monastery St. Marien ad martyres founded in Trier about 700. The vineyards in the Saar Valley are exposed to a very cool climate. As such, vintage conditions and a late harvest are of great importance. With regard to winemaking, Müller’s philosophy is based on the conviction that the finest wines “make themselves.”
