The Bickel-Stumpf estate was formed in 1976, when two enthusiastic wine-growers met. Carmen Bickel and Reimund Stumpf decided to share their lot – personally and professionally. The family’s 13 hectares (35 acres) of vines are in two locations: the Johannisberg site in Thüngersheim, where red varieties, in particular, thrive in the colored sandstone soils; and some 40 kilometers (25 miles) upstream, the Kapellenberg site in Frickenhausen, where primarily Silvaner is planted in shell-limestone soils. The winemaking facilities are on the outskirts of Thüngersheim, while the shop is in a romantic little corner behind the church in Frickenhausen. In the meantime, he is assisted by his son Matthias, who plans to follow in the footsteps of his ancestors. After many apprenticeships in Germany and abroad, Matthias finally realized what great potential the family’s vineyards have to offer.
