The VDP.ESTATE Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch, Erben Thanisch from Bernkastel-Kues, Mosel

The family's wine-growing tradition goes back directly to the first half of the 17th century. Today the winery is managed by Sofia Thanisch in the 11th generation. When Dr. Hugo Thanisch died suddenly in 1895, the winery was continued by his widow Katharina and thus received the additional name, widow Dr. H. Thanisch. It has been in the hands of women for four generations.
At the end of the 19th century, the great-grandparents of the present owner of the winery founded the world fame of the winery with spectacular successes at the wine auctions, the presence of the wines at the European princely courts and on the wine lists of the leading hotels worldwide.
In 1910 the winery was one of the founding members of today's VDP!
The stylish seat of the heir of the Thanisch winery is the "Villa Thanisch", built in 1884 in the style of the Neo-Renaissance, located on the Moselle, directly opposite the castle Landshut.
The recipe for success of the VDP Thanisch Winery are the Riesling wines, among others from the internationally famous Berncasteler DOCTOR site and other VDP GROSSEN LAGEN® in Bernkastel.

The VDP.Wine package
"Riesling Classics from the Moselle"

More than 380 years of wine-growing tradition commit to quality and sustainability. In the vineyard we work according to the guidelines of integrated, environmentally friendly viticulture. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation, vineyard typicity and traditional oak barrels are used for the site wines. "This gives the wines their precision and the potential for a long life," says Sofia Thanisch. The long female tradition of the winery means that the wines are carefully and lovingly matured. They present themselves finely and elegantly, classic Riesling wines as they were enjoyed 100 years ago.

2018 Thanic Riesling, dry | VDP.GUTSWEIN
From our Kueser vineyards, all steep slopes, which lie on the left side of the Moselle and thus opposite Bernkastel, comes this Gutsriesling, which shows a classical as well as mature bouquet. Minerality, fruit and body are its characteristics, in addition a long finish. The wine is perfectly balanced and will still be a pleasure to drink in 10 years' time.

2017 Thanisch Riesling, Kabinett feinherb | VDP.GUTSWEIN
Also from Kues, the birthplace of the theologian and philosopher Nicolaus von Kues, who wrote history in the 15th century as bishop and cardinal of the curia, comes this fine tart VDP. The wine shows the mineral terroir of its origin, a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity and a drinking flow that makes it an all-rounder, whether as a food companion or simply to enjoy.

2018 Bernkastel-Kues Riesling "Old Vines" | VDP.ORTSWEIN
The Thanisch family has been documented for over 380 years in Bernkastel, the centre of the Middle Moselle. From here they have helped to shape the success story of the Moselle Riesling and have set important accents in establishing its international reputation. Reasons enough to present a VDP local wine that is a credit to the Mosel Riesling. Dry in taste, juicy and finely balanced, it shows the qualities associated with a Mosel Riesling.

2015 LAY Riesling, fine bitter | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®
A few hundred metres downstream, only separated from the Moselle by the road from Bernkastel to Graach, lies the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® LAY in Bernkastel. The name reveals the special qualities of the vineyard:
The Middle High German word Lay means slate and indicates the minerality that wines from this location bring with them. Connoisseurs appreciate the Rieslings from the LAY: delicate and harmonious with their balance of subtle fruit sweetness, minerality and acidity, just like this 2015 LAY Riesling, feinherb.

2017 BADSTUBE Riesling, cabinet | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®
A floral, aromatic profile, complexity, finesse and a delicate, long finish are the characteristics of this Riesling from the VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® BADSTUBE in Bernkastel. The name Badstube makes you sit up and take notice, but the mystery is quickly solved: in the Middle Ages, at the foot of the vineyard, in the town of Bernkastel, there was a municipal bathhouse where you could pass the time pleasantly. Then as now, drinking wine is a pleasant and stimulating pastime.

2018 DOCTOR Riesling, late vintage | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®
The legendary Berncasteler DOCTOR, to which a legendary healing power had already been attested in the 14th century, is the Berncasteler DOCTOR. Today it is regarded as the most expensive German vineyard, which is also indicated by the highest agricultural unit value. In imperial and royal houses it was drunk and in novels it attained literary world fame. As a late vintage, the 2018 Berncasteler DOCTOR continues the long tradition of the finest Mosel Riesling wines with its delicate character, finesse and elegance.
