The Rheinhessen wine region covers a large triangle on the left side of the Rhine River between Bingen and Mainz in the north and Worms in the south. It is among the largest and most historic of the German wine regions. The Romans cultivated wine here and the oldest documentation of German vineyards mentions a site in Rheinhessen, the “Glöck” in Nierstein. Sources from 1402 mention “Rüssling” (Riesling) as the grape variety for the first time in Worms. Due to its geographic location, topography, the Donnersberg as a protective shield to the west, proximity to the Rhine River, and a geological mixture of rock and fertile loam and loess soils, Rheinhessen possesses abundant resources for high-quality viticulture. Often called “the land of one thousand hills”, Rheinhessen has over 1600 hours of sunshine and only 550 mm precipitation annually, making it one of the driest regions in Germany. ² In Rheinhessen the quality level Ortsweine is made from VDP.ERSTEN LAGEN® and VDP.GROSSEN LAGEN® vineyards.
