The south to southwest facing VDP.GROSSE LAGE® MITTELHÖLLE lies in a protected side valley of the Elsterbach below the Hansenberg Castle. The 6.5 hectare site is sloped to steep with 10 to 30 percent gradient. The vines, predominantly Riesling, grow on stony-pebbly loess loam with quartzite in the subsoil. History: Although “Hölle” means “hell” in German, this is not the case here. The name stems from the old German world “Helda”, which refers to a steep slope.
