JESUITENGARTEN, Oestrich-Winkel, Geißenheim | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® JESUITENGARTEN is among the warmest vineyards in the Rheingau. This is due in part to the alluvial soils of sandy loam with gravel and sandy interstratifications. The proximity to the Rhine River also makes its contribution: the vineyard directly borders the riverbank path where the warmth-storing effect has its greatest influence. Budbreak and flowering occur early in this microclimate, which allows grapes a prolonged ripening period. The site lies at around 100 metres a.s.l. and with only a 3 % slope toward the south and southwest, it is quite flat. It is located between Geisenheim and Winkel with some sections actually within Winkel. History: The origin of the name stems from the year 1606 when the Archbishop of Mainz bequeathed the St. Bartholomew Chapel and its vineyard to the Jesuit College in Mainz. The vineyard continued to be in the possession of the Jesuits until 1773.
