UHLEN ROTH LAY, Winningen | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

Nomen est omen. ROTH is the old German word for red and indeed the rock in the steep vineyard terraces of the VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® ROTH LAY is dark red. The slate was created by erosion of the Old Red Continent. As the name suggests, it was not only old - it existed 400 million years ago - but also reddish in colour due to oxidation of the iron content. Fine sands were carried off into the sea and pressed together in the collision of the primeval continents. The Moselle River cut through this, leaving the steep rocky face exposed. The south-facing UHLEN ROTH LAY is the focal point of an archaic amphitheatre. Countless terraces cling to the steep slope like swallow nests The slope rises to a height of 240 metres with an inclination of up to more than 170 %. Visually comparable to the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, it is a unique natural spectacle. The vineyard is also populated by the rare Apollo butterfly; its largest distribution north of the Alps is found here.
