SONNENUHR (WEHLEN) | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®, Wehlen | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The southwest facing VDP.GROSSE LAGE® (Wehlener) SONNENUHR is located across from Wehlen on the Mosel. The site climbs at a very steep slope gradient of 60 to 100 percent. The vines grow on pure, medium deep, weathered Devon slate debris soil. The rock content is high. The long sunshine duration, the intense heat radiation of the soil, and the proximity of the Mosel determine the microclimate of this GL. The GL SONNENUHR is the prime parcel within the 40-hectare Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard. In these steep sites the vines of the main grape variety Riesling (99 %) are mostly trained on individual posts. History: The Sonnenuhr vineyard is named after the sundial built by the vintner Jodocus Prüm of Wehlen, who built a sundial in Wehlen and in Zeltingen vineyards in the year 1843. The site was originally called “Wehlener” and “Zehlener”. The new colloquial Einzellagen name prevailed from the beginning of the 20th century.
