UHLEN BLAUFÜSSER LAY, Winningen | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

Among the many very sandy slates in the Winningen area, the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® BLAUFÜSSER LAY is the exception to the rule. The tropical marine sediment here is characterized less by fine sands than by clay particles and plankton. It is not certain whether the name derives from the colour of the slate (BLAU means blue and LAY is the old, Celtic name for slate), from the neighbouring cliff face called “Blumslay”, or from the blue milvus, the bird of prey that nested here until the last century. It has the same parameters as the other sites in Uhlen: 80 - 240 metres above sea level, slope gradient over 150 % and terraces with walls in traditional dry construction. Due to its high clay content, the soil is cool, but the vineyard turns slightly south-west and continues to be warmed by the last rays of sunlight.
