The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® OHLIGSBERG is located directly on the Mosel and faces mostly toward the west, but small sections have a southwest or even south exposition. With a 40 to 80 percent gradient, the site is extremely steep in some parts and all labour must be executed manually. The soil is grey-blue weathered Devon slate with bands of quartzite. The seven vineyard hectares lie at 120 to 200 metres a.s.l. Because the Mosel is dammed quite broadly here, the reflection of light is quite high and the dark soil stores the warmth well.
History: The name originates from the “zum Oelberg” Chapel. The wines from the Ohligsberg chapel were very highly esteemed in the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. They were among the most famous and valuable wines in Germany. In 1922, wine from the 1913 vintage was served at the Nobel Prize ceremony.
