The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® DOKTORGARTEN geologically belongs to the Ihringer Winklerberg on the Kaiserstuhl and has the same black weathered volcanic soil. A unique characteristic of the volcanic rock are the lime inclusions. The vineyard descends toward the south east, south and southwest with the Staatsweingut – Gutsbetrieb Blankenhornsberg crowing the top of the hill like a fortress. Steep with a slope of 35 percent, the GL DOKTORGARTEN is situated at 200 to 280 metres a.s.l. The soil warms quickly due to its black colour and stores this warmth, which benefits the vines. Since the year 2020 the layer is again divided into its two troughs, which are also classified as VDP.GROSSE LAGE®. The WINKLEN vineyard lies to the west of the estate building with a view of the Rhine valley and the Vosges mountains, and the KLEINTAL vineyard to the east with a view of the inner Kaiserstuhl and the Ihringer vineyards of the Winklerbergs and Fohrenberg. This allows an even sharper demarcation of the origins.
History: The site was named after the viticulture researcher and viticulture association president, Professor Dr. Adolph Blankenhorn, who conducted research and experimentation on the slope. His family reclaimed the vineyard in 1842 and commenced replanting in 1844. Family Blankenhorn sold the vineyard to the Agricultural Chamber of Baden in 1919. It was transferred to the Staatliche Weinbauinstitut Freiburg (Federal Viticulture Institute Freiburg) in 1954.
