The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® PITTERMÄNNCHEN is a south facing vineyard slope with a 20 – 50 % gradient that is located above the Trollbach tributary in the Trollbach Valley. The direct exposition to the sun warms the vineyard quickly; in the rockiest areas, temperatures can reach up to 50 °C (122 °F). The vineyard cools down at night, providing for exciting aroma development and preservation of good acid structure. The soils of the GL PITTERMÄNNCHEN, situated between 220 and 200 metres a.s.l., are predominantly grey Devon slate and red slate from the Permian period, but pebbles and quartzite can also be found. A covering layer of loam provides good available water for the vines.
History: The name Pittermänchen comes from a silver coin that was called a “Petermännchen”. This signified the high value of the vineyards. In the 16th century 32 Petermännchen equalled one guilder.
