WÜRZGARTEN, Ürzig | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® WÜRZGARTEN opens like a bright red, very steep, south to southeast facing amphitheatre across from the village Erden directly on the Mosel River. The soil is weathered red slate debris with high rock content. High iron oxide concentrations in the soil lend the vineyard its lively colour. The site climbs from 110 to 220 metres a.s.l. in up to 80 percent gradient and Riesling vines are planted and trained on individual posts. The GL WÜRZGARTEN are the prime parcel in the 53-hectare Würzgarten vineyard. History: The name stems from the medieval wine village tradition of making “Würzweine” or “spiced wines”. To this end, herb gardens were planted in vineyards like Würzgarten. A document from the 13th century states the name of the fief vintner as Godefridus Th. Wurzegard. Today, a show herb garden exists in the steep slope of the vineyard.
