IM HAHN, Bacharach | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

With a slope grade of 65 to 70 percent, the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® HAHN is a typical representative of the steep vineyards of the narrow Mittelrhein Valley. Located next to the Lorelei on the Rhine River, this south to southeast facing site descends from 200 to 80 metres a.s.l. The soil of the approximately two-hectare GL is comprised of dark weathered Devon slate. It warms easily and releases warmth to the vines on summer evenings and nights, thus prolonging the daily ripening phase. In addition to this, the reflection of sunshine from the Rhine River intensifies the solar radiation on the slope. Riesling is the predominant variety that grows in the higher reaches, while Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) grows at the foot of the slope. History: The site was one the property of the Hane Monastery, which is likely the source of its name. Slate for building roofs was quarried below the vineyard until 1936.
