Steep slopes with 30 to 60 percent gradient, the long hours of sunshine due to the south to southwest exposition, and elevation of 110 to 180 metres a.s.l. are the attributes that characterise the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® SILBERBERG. The 13.8-hectare vineyard is planted mostly with Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir). The soils vary with different areas dominated by greywacke, slate, or loess. Each soil type lends the wine a different character: greywacke brings fine fruit, while loess yields generous body.
History: The Silberberg is located above an old Roman villa. Archaeological diggings revealed old melting ovens, which indicate the mining of silver ore. This is one logical conclusion for the name. Another plausible variation is that the name comes from “Selberberg”, referring to a mountain on which wild sage grew.
