The tiny VDPL.GROSSE LAGE® ZEHNMORGEN comprises 0.6 hectares of vines that nearly reach the bank of the Rhine. Although this site sits on the lower Rote Hang (Red Slope), the typical regional clay and sandstone, which is coloured red due to iron oxide content, is not found here. Instead, heavy, large limestone rocks that dominate the subsoil break the surface of the clay. The site extends from the flat bank of the Rhine River at 94 metres up to more inclined sites at 124 metres a.s.l. This east-facing slope is the first to greet the morning sunshine. The Rhine serves as a reflector of the sun and simultaneously transports cool air into the ZEHNMORGEN GL. The main grape variety is Riesling.
History: The name reflects the site’s historic measure of area, ten (zehn) morgen. This is also approximately the size of the current vineyard, which measures 2.5 hectares.
