UHLEN, Kobern-Gondorf, Winningen | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The extremely steep VDP.GROSSE LAGE® UHLEN vineyard virtually clings to a south to southwest facing cliff west of Winningen; the slope drops at 100 to 150 % (45 to 56 °) toward the Moselle River. Grey slate with a high content of calcareous fossils and reddish, iron-rich sandy slate comprise the meagre, rocky foundation of this slope that hugs a bend of the Moselle. The vines climb from 80 o 200 metres a.s.l. and benefit from a warm microclimate in vineyard terraces. Because the dry stone walls of the terraces are not built or repaired with mortar, they are a habitat for diverse flora and fauna including the rare European green lizards and Apollo butterflies. History: The name Uhlen stems from the German word for owl.
