CENTGRAFENBERG, Bürgstadt | VDP.GROSSE LAGE®

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® CENTGRAFENBERG lies well protected in the convex valley of the Miltenberg mountain. Over a long time the Main has digged a deep, narrow bed here. The GL CENTGRAFENBERG lies on the south side of a basin at a sharp south-western bend of river Main. Due to the Odenwald and Spessart mountains further protection, a warm microclimate develops. The CENTGRAFENBERG GL is gently sloped to steep with a 10 to 40 percent gradient. It lies at 160 to 250 metres a.s.l. The soil is shaped by the oldest stone in the typical Franconian Trias formation, the variegated sandstone – in different degrees of weathering. This ferreous sandstone with its red colour is particularly advantageous for Spätburgunder (pinot noir). The best plots for Riesling are located, where the hill bends to the West. History: Before Churfranken, the western part of Franconia, became Bavarian, it was once mandated to the prince-bishops of Mainz. From these former times of prosperity around 1500 AC, you can still find remains of a rich wine culture, e.g. this vivid wine town with many old cellars. There is proven evidence for the cultivation of red wine in this region. The word “Cent” comes from hundred and points back to the early history of settlement in the Valley basin of Miltenberg, with a Celtic refuge castle from 3000 BC.
